Driving Innovation Together: Alder Hey and University of Cambridge Collaboration
Alder Hey Innovation and Cambridge University have worked together on two key projects,
combining clinical knowledge with academic expertise to improve paediatric healthcare.
Project 1:
Digital Speech Therapy for Cleft Palate Working with Professor Alan Blackwell and
Computer Science students, Alder Hey developed a digital tool to support speech therapy for
children with cleft palate. Outcomes include:
- Algorithms for detecting specific speech errors.
- Visual feedback through child-friendly animations.
- An accessible Android app integrated with Alder Hey’s existing platform.
- The project received Cambridge University’s “Best Contribution to a Better Future Award.”
Project 2:
AI Conversational Tool for ASD/ADHD Patient Histories This project aimed to
streamline the collection of developmental histories for diagnosing ASD and ADHD, significantly reducing clinician workload. Features include:
- A flexible questionnaire system for convenient completion.
- Automated report generation summarising patient information and highlighting areas
- needing further clinician input.
- Cross-platform accessibility with secure data handling.
The collaboration identified opportunities for further improving AI accuracy and clinician-
aligned reporting.
Lessons from Collaboration:
- Importance of clear translation between clinical needs and technical implementation.
- Value of interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Necessity of thorough early communication and planning.
Next Steps:
Both teams plan to build on these successes, continuing collaborative innovation to enhance paediatric healthcare solutions.
