Transforming Implantable Device Tracking for Safer Surgical Care
With ever-evolving patient safety regulations to ensure optimal patient care and a national compliance deadline approaching, the Surgical Division has launched a vital project to modernise how implantable medical devices are recorded and tracked. Currently, device data is captured only in surgical notes —a method that, while functional, does not meet the evolving NHS England standards.
Bridging the Compliance Gap with Smart Technology
To meet the deadline, the project team is working with the Automation team to deliver a streamlined digital solution. A bespoke Power App will allow theatre staff to accurately record device data in real time, improving usability and aligning with national reporting standards.
Driving Safer, Smarter, and More Sustainable Outcomes
This system will significantly enhance patient safety by enabling robust tracking of all implantable devices, supporting faster response in the event of a recall or issue. Data captured through the app will sync directly with the Trust’s Dataverse platform, supporting real-time analytics, improved audit processes, and clinical oversight.
Future-Ready and Staff-Focused
In addition to improving data quality, the solution simplifies processes for clinical teams, reducing manual workload, saving time, and minimising the risk of error. Post May 2025, further discussions will determine long-term system support.
This strategic initiative forms part of the Trust’s 2024/25 Automation Pipeline and reinforces its commitment to quality, efficiency, and patient-centred care.
