Two of Alder Hey’s digital innovators recently represented the Trust at AIMED 2025, a three-day global gathering, that brings together the brightest minds in artificial intelligence and medicine to shape the future of healthcare. Held this year in San Diego, the event welcomed more than 1,000 clinicians, innovators, data scientists and healthcare leaders from around the world.
Across the three days, delegates explored a wide range of emerging themes in AI and healthcare, from generative AI and Large Language Models (LLM), to cybersecurity, decision support and next-generation clinical tools.
Representing Alder Hey were Olufemi Olajide, Head of Data Science, and Darren Gates, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist and Clinical Innovation Consultant.
Delivering the Alder Hey Message
The visit focussed on four key aims:
– Showcase the Alder Hey Vision 2030 and the new AI strategy, positioning Alder Hey as a global leader in paediatric artificial intelligence
– Engage with world-leading experts who are actively defining the next decade of AI in healthcare
– Explore emerging technologies including conversational voice interfaces, cognitive AI models, ambient clinical documentation tools and advanced decision-support ecosystems
– Build new collaborations with innovators, clinicians, researchers and industry partners to accelerate the safe, ethical and effective use of AI for children and young people from across the NHS and internationally

Key Outcomes
The visit delivered several important outcomes for Alder Hey:
– Enhanced global visibility of Alder Hey as a European leader in paediatric AI, reinforced through participation in keynote sessions, workshops and panel discussions
– Insight into cutting-edge research, including world models, cognitive architecture, uncertainty quantification and responsible AI frameworks
– Clear understanding of workforce needs, such as expanding the AI literacy programmes and exploring the creation of clinical AI fellowships
– Detailed learning across multiple domains, from AI governance and ambient documentation to surgical workflow optimisation, paediatric cardiology and learning health system
Olufemi Olajide, head of data science said:
Attending AIMed 25 was an important opportunity to position Alder at the forefront of international conversations about the future of AI in healthcare.
Presenting our work reinforced our leadership, opened doors to new collaborations and demonstrated the NHS’ capability and ambition on an international scale.
The highlight of the Summit event was the level of engagement with senior global stakeholders, particularly the opportunity to discuss paediatric AI innovation, share challenges openly and explore collaborations that could accelerate our clinical, research and operational ambitions.”
