Alder Hey Innovation delivered a discovery programme that brought breakthrough sensor technology, including wearables and other sensors, to address a variety of challenges in the delivery of care. This approach provided staff, patients, and families with seamless and equitable access to care by leveraging the most advanced sensor technology.
NeedleSmart
Alder Hey Innovation partnered with NeedleSmart, a company that developed an innovative solution using unique and patented technology. The system transformed a used and contaminated hypodermic needle immediately after use by heating it to over 1300°C within six seconds, then compressing and reforming it into a safe “ball” of metal at the end of the syringe.
They assessed the viability of NeedleSmart during their initial Covid-19 vaccination programme and collaborated to further develop the data-agnostic software platforms CWS and DVS (Clinical Workflow System / Digital Vaccination System).
Hy-Genie
Hy-Genie provided innovative hand hygiene support through an active monitoring system. This allowed hospitals to detect usage of hand hygiene stations, contributing to a reduction in healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) and enhancing patient safety.
CLIK
CLIK was a gamified portable hearing test, developed with a vision where hearing loss no longer equated to isolation. Alder Hey Innovation supported the development of games tailored to different cognitive abilities, designed to actively engage users and provide accessible testing for those who found standard hearing tests difficult to complete. Its intelligent and portable design enabled hearing assessments to be conducted anytime, anywhere.
Asthma Wearables
Alder Hey Innovation pursued a wearable technology initiative aimed at helping children understand and no longer fear their asthma. They collaborated with partners to create a wearable device that could:
- Detect and record physiological and environmental data, personalised to the patient.
- Predict asthma-related events through AI technology with smart analytics.
Inform through an engaging app platform that sent reminders, alerts, allowed note-taking, and connected to clinician databases.
