TeenTech Innovation Hack Inspires Next Generation of Healthcare Innovators
In March 2023, Alder Hey Innovation had the pleasure of hosting a groundbreaking TeenTech Innovation Hack in collaboration with Microsoft and Black Marble, welcoming students from across the country to the hospital’s Innovation Hub for a day dedicated to tackling real-world healthcare challenges.
The event formed part of TeenTech’s 2023 global challenge category focused on Patient Safety. Throughout the day, students aged 11 to 19 engaged with cutting-edge health technology, explored how innovation can improve patient outcomes, and developed their own creative ideas to enhance patient safety.

Innovation Meets Inspiration
Students participated in a range of hands-on demonstrations, including 3D printing, remote monitoring systems, virtual and augmented reality, and AI-driven tools — all technologies with the potential to transform healthcare delivery.
Over the day, student teams collaborated to develop innovative concepts aimed at improving patient safety, with standout projects including:
- Smart glasses to assist people with photosensitive epilepsy by detecting environmental triggers and issuing real-time alerts.
- A smart speaker system designed to support patients transitioning from hospital to home, helping to improve adherence to care plans and reduce readmissions.
These ideas demonstrated not only creativity and technical insight but also a genuine passion for making healthcare safer and more inclusive.
The event also encouraged students to think beyond specific technologies and reimagine the entire healthcare system through TeenTech’s Transformational Award. Teams were challenged to explore how modern tech, new roles, and systemic redesign could build a safer and more efficient health service from the ground up.
Select projects from the day were invited to progress to the TeenTech Awards Final, held in London on June 30th 2023, where students showcased their solutions on a national stage.
